- AVOIDING SATURATION OF ITALY'S REFINERY STORAGE FACILITIES
If residues from the refinery can't be continuously evacuated, there is a risk that production at the industrial site will be limited or even stopped.
- BYPASSING THE HAZARDS OF THE RIVER
The Rhine is impassable several times a year due to flooding or drought. This results in increased storage costs in Switzerland and delayed delivery times to the Netherlands. The customer was looking for a partner who could restore its confidence in rail transport.
By closely analysing the specifications and the entire transport plan from start to finish, we designed a solution that is 99% rail - no rivers, no transhipment and no storage. It's a much more robust solution because there's no break in the load and, above all, it's more economical because there's no need to stop and pay customs duties in Switzerland. The result is a 100% customer-controlled rail pipeline from northern Italy to the port of Rotterdam.
AN INTEROPERABLE LOCOMOTIVE
To cross the borders of Italy, Switzerland, Germany and the Netherlands without stopping, we found a partner with an interoperable locomotive that required only a simple change of driver.
The average journey time was reduced from 3.5 days (at best) to 24 hours. Customs duties for storage in Switzerland were eliminated and the fluidity of the route was guaranteed with dedicated resources.
MANAGEMENT OF THE RAILROAD CAR FLEET
In organising the rail traction for this project, we also rethought the management of the required fleet of 75 wagons, which allowed us to recover isolated wagons from other production sites in Italy, route them to maintenance workshops in Germany and even optimise empty returns.
The Italian customer now has a logistics solution that allows them to take advantage of import opportunities from Rotterdam.
