The challenge

The project involved optimising a transport plan that originally combined rail and river transport on the Rhine with transhipment and storage in Switzerland.
The refinery in northern Italy that contacted us produces thousands of tons of benzene each week, which is then transported to it's sister petrochemical plant in the Netherlands for recycling.

  • AVOIDING SATURATION OF ITALY'S REFINERY STORAGE FACILITIES

If residues from the refinery can't be continuously evacuated, there is a risk that production at the industrial site will be limited or even stopped.

  • BYPASSING THE HAZARDS OF THE RIVER

The Rhine is impassable several times a year due to flooding or drought. This results in increased storage costs in Switzerland and delayed delivery times to the Netherlands. The customer was looking for a partner who could restore its confidence in rail transport.
